After having a good night's rest, we decided to do go for breakfast at a nearby coffee shop. It was fairly full with many locals having their breakfast there. We tried our luck and asked if there was any "pao" available but were informed that it would only be available at 12pm.
Yam Cake (RM 1.50/plate) |
Popiah (RM 3/plate) |
Curry Mee (RM 3) |
The yam cake had a floury texture, most probably due to having way more flour than yam and was a little on the soft side. Popiah was great, we ended ordering a second plate which seemed to have more chilly added which in my opinion made it even better. The curry mee taste's better than it looks and had a good portion of char siew and fishballs in it.
Once we had filled our stomachs, we headed of to the Qing Ren Qiao Fruits Farming. The fruit farm which plants passion fruit is located opposite the coffeeshop where we had our breakfast; it is also opposite to Ban Joo Hing Restaurant.
We were unable to purchase or sample any passion fruits as it seemed like the workers were all busy attending to the plants that morning. I guess we were a little too early, no passion fruits had been picked yet and neither did there seem any for sale. After a brief stroll, we decided to head to our next destination, Joo Fa Trading famous for its coffee powder.
The "lorongs" here in Tanjung Sepat are fairly narrow allowing 2 and sometimes only 1 car to pass makes it fairly difficult to move around especially if you drive a larger car. We decided to park at the Tg. Sepat Community Hall and walk to Joo Fa which is close by.

Once we parked our car, we headed to Lorong 5, where Joo Fa Trading is located. Upon arrival we saw the owner, busy processing coffee beans. Nevertheless upon seeing us, even though there were only 4 of us, he proceeded to give us a tour on how his coffee is made.

At the end of the tour, he offered us some "special" coffee. Now this is not the same coffee that he sells but one that he has been researching on. I must say, the coffee that he served us was extremely smooth, aromatic and did not have a hint of bitterness in it. Even after swallowing the coffee, there was a lingering fragrance in your mouth. In my opinion, it was on par or even better than those "commercial" coffees.
We purchased some black coffee powder (RM 8/pack) and were also informed that he has white coffee as well but was out of stock.

Since we were just round the corner from the famous Hai Yew Heng Pau, we decided to drop by to check out the place so it would be easier to find later in the afternoon when they open. When we arrived, we could see that the staff were already busy making the hand made paus. We checked with their staff and were informed that the paus would be ready by 1pm.
After some exploring around the different "lorongs" we headed back to Gano Farm and prepared to check-out.

Once checked out, we decided to go for lunch since there was still a fair bit of time until the paus were available. We headed to another famous place, Asam Batu Laut Restaurant.

Stir Fried Tapioca Leaf (RM 8) |
Pumpkin Mantis Prawn (RM 12) |
Hot Plate Oh Chien (RM 13) |
Assam Style Ma Yau (RM 32) |
All 4 dishes here we done excellently. This place was the best among the 3 seafood places we tried on this trip. The tapioca leaves were very tender and not overcooked. Mantis Prawn in Pumpkin Sauce was something new for us but it suited our taste and we loved it. The Hot Plate "Oh Chien" was good as well. I was surprised that such a simple looking dish could taste so good. The oysters were of a decent size and portion and went well with the sauce it was cooked in. The Assam "Ma Yau" was superb, very savory, sweet enough, sour enough, the spiciness was just right and the sauce was more than enough to go around. The fish was fresh, not too big, not too small, just nice.

After the enjoyable lunch, we headed to Thong Hsing Trading at lorong 7 for fishballs.
Thong Hsing Trading |
Fishballs galore |
They guys at Thong Hsing Trading were very friendly and free samples were provided so that we could taste their 100% pure fish, no flour fishballs. The fishballs range from RM0.50 to RM1.00 each depending on what was taken. They also have taufu stuffed with fishpaste (uncooked) which i highly recommend getting. The stuffed taufu that they sell does not have the slight sourness which is usually present in those that you get from your local fresh markets.
Thong Hsing Trading is located at the end (towards main road) of Lorong 7 behind the Chinese Temple at Lorong 6. Look for Yikee Seafood Bak Kut Teh shop at 247B, Jalan Besar and you should be able to see Thong Hsing's sign board. It is the lorong next to the bak kut teh shop.
Once done purchasing fishballs we headed to Hai Yew Heng to purchase their famous "Mui Choy Pau"
Pau Price |
Hai Yew Heng |
We purchased 2 types of pau, the "Shen Rou Pau" and "Mei Chai Pau". The Shen Rou Pau was quite good, it had a slightly different taste compared to paus in KL, the 5 spice powder taste seem to be stronger. The meat was chunky and it came with a small slice of egg similar to those put in "Big Paus". I find the meat a little to "dry" to my liking and the "wine" could have been more, plus the price is a little on the high side. The "Mei Chai Pau" was very tasty, the "mei chai" was shredded to a very fine testure and cooked sufficiently long enough with the minced pork allowing all the flavors to come together.
